RK Toyota Milestones

RK Toyota builds its and reputation on a commitment to excellence.

Richard Kline (the RK in RK Auto Group) became a Virginia Chevrolet dealer in 1964 when he founded RK Chevrolet at its original location of 616 Virginia Beach Blvd. Since then, there have been four additions to RK Auto Group: RK Toyota, RK Scion, RK Buick and RK Subaru. In Part 1: RK Chevrolet milestones, we covered the years between 1949 and 1975. The story continues in 1977.

RK Chevrolet grows by leaps & bounds with the additions of RK Subaru and RK Buick.

  • 1977: RK Chevrolet acquires the Alfa Romeo franchise. (Alfa Romeo has since discontinued sales in the U.S.).
  • 1980 / 1989: RK Chevrolet acquires the Peugeot (1980) and Lotus (1989) franchises. (Peugeot has since discontinued its U.S. sales.)
  • 1980: RK Chevrolet receives the first of 4 Chevrolet Motor Division Service Supremacy Awards. This is an award that less than 400 of the nation's 5,000 Chevrolet dealers have won.
  • 1981: In response to growing demand for maintenance and service, RK Auto Group undergoes a major body shop expansion.
  • 1985: RK Auto Group acquires the Subaru franchise, which becomes RK Subaru.
  • 1986: Robert Kline is named dealer-operator. Robert Kline is named president. His father Richard continues to serve as Chairman of the Board.
  • 1990: RK Chevrolet acquires the Daihatsu franchise. (Daihatsu has since discontinued its U.S. sales.)
  • 1992: RK Auto Group acquires the Buick franchise, which becomes RK Buick.
  • 1993: RK converts the local telephone company into a warehouse for new and used vehicle parts. These are supplied internationally to both businesses and individuals.
  • 1993: RK TruckWorld is launched. It was, and still is the state’s only used commercial truck showroom.
  • 1993: RK launches a new, full-service body shop.
  • 1994: RK Auto Group is named a Top 500 Dealer in the US by Wards Auto.
  • 1998: RK receives the prestigious "Genuine Leaders Award" for excellence in sales, service, and customer satisfaction.
  • 1998: RK Chevrolet receives the "Genuine Leaders Award.”

21st century and beyond: RK Toyota is launched to better serve customers and the community.

  • 2001: RK Toyota and RK Scion become part of the RK Auto Group family. RK Toyota / RK Scion are located at 2301 West Mercury Boulevard in Hampton, Virginia.
  • 2005: RK Toyota, RK Chevrolet, RK Scion, RK Subaru, RK Buick and RK TruckWorld combined sell approximately 9,000 vehicles and continue to employ over 300.
