Throughout the history of the United States, Virginians have played an important role in the military. We recommend that you take a day trip – or perhaps something longer – to visit the military monuments in our state. Our country’s first major military monument to women is located in Arlington National Cemetery.
The Women’s Memorial honors the nearly 2 million women who have served in our country’s armed forces. This monument was authorized on November 6, 1986 by then President Ronald Reagan.
Plus, there are many more military monuments found in Arlington Cemetery.
Moving back in time, be sure to honor Virginia’s Civil War history and military pride displayed on Monument Avenue.
In 2007, the American Planning Association named Monument Avenue as one of the 10 great streets in the United States of America. Monuments there are dedicated to Robert E. Lee, J.E.B. Stuart, Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson.
