RK Auto Group is Proud of Our Military

RK Auto Group has a long, proud history of supporting the military bases located in and around Virginia Beach. The area is home to a number of bases including the United States Navy’s Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Flight Training Center (FTC) Dam Neck, Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Little Creek, Norfolk Navy Base, and the United States Army’s Fort Story.

Back in 1964 when the RK Chevrolet dealership first opened a lot was happening in the military. Here is a timeline of events that took place during our first years of operation.

U.S. Military Events 1964-1968*

1964: Congo (Zaire). The United States sent four transport planes to provide airlift for Congolese troops during a rebellion and to transport Belgian paratroopers to rescue foreigners.

1964: Military coup in Brazil; support given by US is provided but not needed.

1964-75: Vietnam War. US military advisers had been in South Vietnam for a decade, and their numbers had been increased as the military position of the Saigon government became weaker. After citing what he termed were attacks on US destroyers in the Tonkin Gulf, President Johnson asked in August 1964 for a resolution expressing US determination to support freedom and protect peace in Southeast Asia. Congress responded with the Tonkin Gulf Resolution, expressing support for "all necessary measures" the President might take to repel armed attacks against US forces and prevent further aggression. Following this resolution, and following a Communist attack on a US installation in central Vietnam, the United States escalated its participation in the war to a peak of 543,000 military personnel by April 1969.

1965: Dominican Republic; Invasion of Dominican Republic. The United States intervened to protect lives and property during a Dominican revolt and sent 20,000 US troops as fears grew that the revolutionary forces were coming increasingly under Communist control.

1967: Congo (Zaire). The United States sent three military transport aircraft with crews to provide the Congo central government with logistical support during a revolt.

1968: Capture of USS Pueblo, a United States ship whose mission was to spy on the military of other nations by using a range of equipment to capture and record radio and electronic transmissions. It was captured by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea when the DPRK stated that she strayed into their territorial waters, in what is known as the Pueblo incident. The USS Pueblo, still held by DPRK today, remains a commissioned vessel of the US Navy.

1968: U.S. starts secret bombing campaign against targets along the Ho Chi Minh trail in the sovereign nations of Cambodia and Laos. The bombing last at least two years.
