RK provides military friendly jobs for veterans, reservists and service people on active duty. Sergeant Major John Malaspina, Army (Retired), served for 23 years and is the Assistant Operations Manager today. Veteran employee Malaspina talks about life as a Drill Sergeant and spending 23 years in the Army.
“I joined the Army because that was what my brothers did,” says Malaspina. “But they got out after a few years - I stayed.” A natural leader, Malaspina was a squad leader by the age of 20 and did a four-year stint as a Tack Instructor at Drill Sergeant School, reaching E9 status.
As a Sergeant Major, Malaspina learned military leadership and teamwork skills that still help him today.
“I’m very proud of the work I did with my squads,” says Malaspina. “It was all about developing people, which I loved then and use in my job today.” Malaspina won a prestigious Commandant award from the Drill Sergeant School and the Legion of Merit for his military leadership contributions.
For Malaspina, life after military leadership continues to be exciting.
“I was told it would be hard to transition to the civilian workforce after serving in the Army,” says Malaspina. Luckily, RK made the transition an easy one when Malaspina started in 1998. “I wanted to work with people and heard that RK was a military friendly company.”
